Agliano Terme
Agliano Terme is a small village in Piedmont surrounded by the Monferrato vineyards recognized by Unesco as a World Heritage Site, together with Langhe and Roero.
Vineyards as far as the eye can see surround the town which since the beginning of the twentieth century was a renowned spa, thanks to its waters which still flow today in the valley of the Fonti and which were discovered in 1770.
The water of Agliano, salty-sulfur-magnesian, is among the richest and most complete thermal waters in Italy and it is possible to appreciate its benefits in the establishment that has collected the inheritance of the ancient Hotel Fons Salutis.
Agliano Terme is located in an area considered the home of the production of Barbera d’Asti and is one of the territories with the largest area cultivated with this vine.
Barbera d’Asti, Barbera d’Asti Superiore and Nizza are born and refined in the cellars of the producers.
Their labels can also be found in the former Church of San Michele in Piazza San Giacomo, the subject of an important redevelopment work and home to BaArt, a space that embraces the local population and helps to preserve its identity.
There are many ways to discover Agliano and its villages.
You can choose between electric bicycles, walks or trekking, with six routes to discover suggestive panoramas and hidden corners, between sport and nature.
You can book tastings and get to know the winemakers who in these lands hand down the art of making wine from generation to generation.
You can stroll through the alleys of the center and take a break and then discover the historic shops that offer sweet and savory delicacies such as tagliatelle alla Barbera, drunken salami, hand made breadsticks, chocolate cake with Barbera and much more.
You can relax with a glass at sunset and at the table discover traditional recipes.
The world of food and wine is also at the centre of courses for aspiring chefs, waiters, bartenders and tour operators who attend the Hotel School in Agliano, the professional training agency Colline Astigiane.
An excellent opportunity, in autumn, to visit Agliano is the Barbera Fish Festival, which takes place every two years in October and is dedicated to the curious marriage between Barbera d’Asti and Norwegian cod.
In spring, on the other hand, between May and June, Barbera Unplugged celebrates our fantastic red wines with tastings, accompanied by great music.
Whether it is spring, autumn, winter or summer, you cannot miss a visit to the tower that stands where the ancient castle destroyed in the seventeenth century once stood. A plaque commemorates Bianca Lancia, who, between history and legend, is said to have been the only woman to win the difficult heart of Frederick II of Swabia. From their relationship three children were born, including Manfredi of whom Dante speaks in the Divine Comedy.
The view over the hills is breathtaking and on clear days you can see the Alps with the unmistakable profile of the Monviso.
